Blenheim Palace is the home of the 11th Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. It is one of the finest examples of 'English Baroque', and the Palace and Park have been declared a World Heritage Site. Built for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, in recognition of his victory at the battle of Blenheim in 1704, the Palace is set in 2,100 acres of parkland landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and its architect was Sir John Vanbrugh. The collection includes tapestries, paintings, sculptures and fine furniture displayed in magnificent gilded state rooms. Outstanding is the Long Library containing over 10,000 volumes in a room 183 feet long. Formal gardens by Achille Duchene grace the east and west fronts, and to the south immaculate lawns sweep down to the pleasure grounds, arboretum and lake. Blenheim Palace is still lived in and cared for by the family for whom it was built. Here Sir Winston Churchill was born; his memory is celebrated here today by his birthroom and an exhibition of his life and work.
